Self-Publishing, defined

Some authors who approach us to publish their books aren't aware of the concept of being a self-publisher. If you look it up online, places like Wikipedia will give you the answer:

"Self-publishing is the publication of any book or other media by the author of the work, without the involvement of an established third-party publisher. The author is responsible and in control of entire process including design (cover/interior), formats, price, distribution, marketing & PR. The authors can do it all themselves or outsource all or part of the process to companies that offer these services."

This means that you, the self-publisher, are in control of the entire publishing process.

The self-publisher has to:

• finance the publishing
• decide on the appearance of the book
• choose what materials to use
• decide how many copies to print
• determine what price to sell the book at
• have to promote the book
• distribute the book
• work out your sales and marketing strategy

...and so on.

It is not an easy task, but those who enjoy challenges will have the experience of their lives!

Why self-publish?

An established publishing house will only choose to accept manuscripts that will potentially bring in revenue. It's business.

This means that many authors have to face rejection and the closing of that door to their dreams.

An author who really wants to have their manuscript published into a book can then take the independent route.

There are many pros and cons, though, and it is a serious commitment - so consider things carefully before taking the plunge.
