There are 3 stages to the self-publishing process:
Remember, as the self-publisher, you are in charge of every step of the way - unless you decide to outsource the work. These are the things you will encounter:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you write and develop your manuscript. It is assumed that when you want to publish your own book, you have already written everything and compiled your content. Polish up the content and copy as much as you're able before moving to the next stage...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Editing is about content flow and consistency while proofreading is about language and spelling accuracy. As the author, you have looked at the manuscript from the time you started writing it. Get someone with a fresh perspective to help you to edit and proofread your script.
You may need to make some changes or re-write a little. Just remind yourself of the outcome - seeing that printed book in your hands, and feeling proud that you've gone as far as you could to make it the best book you possibly could. A little effort at this stage will really bring you a lifetime of satisfaction.
Also remember that you have to do your best to get your facts straight, because as a self-publisher, you are fully responsible - and liable - for the content in your book.
If you know someone who does the kind of illustrations you want, or can take photos you need, you can collaborate with them at this point to really put your own imprint on your book. Otherwise, this can wait for the layout stage.
Make sure you clear the use of copyright for all your content - information and graphics - because as a self-publisher you are personally liable for breaches in copyright.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Get professional help to give your book a professional appearance. If you think you can do it yourself, make sure you get the guidelines and requirements from the supplier that is going to do the printing. But this is the stage where everything comes together, creatively.
Apply for your ISBN and CIP numbers if necessary. You have a month from the date of application to submit the required 2 copies of your book to Legal Deposit, so don't do this too early in the process.
This is where you make choices about the size of the book, and the many other decisions about printing. It may be tedious and confusing, but this is the last stage.
With printing complete, you will now be able to hold your very own book in your hands. Enjoy the thrill of completing your journey as a self-publishing author!
